Shop safer and smarter with the Clean 15

PAPAYA BREAKFAST HAWAII WM LRMany of us are familiar with the EWG’s Dirty Dozen, a list of fruits and veggies that the Environmental Working Group ( EWG ) has compiled that shows high levels of pesticides.  But there is great news they have also created a list of fruits and veggies that generally has lowest incidents of pesticides called the Clean 15.  This list shows consumers that choosing these types of foods over the dirty dozen as well as choosing organically grown fruits and veggies can help families eat cleaner! Below is a list of fruits and veggies that are a good buy if you can’t afford, or don’t want to buy organic.

Clean 15

Papaya is my new fave-fruit

Papaya is my new fave-fruit

  • Pineapple
  • Papayas
  • Cantaloupe
  • Grapefruit
  • Kiwi
  • Mangos
  • Mushrooms
  • Corn
  • Sweet Potatoes
  • Sweet Peas
  • Onions
  • Cabbage
  • Avocado
  • Eggplant
  • Asparagus

With these fruits and veggies you can easily replace those that are on the dirty dozen lists.  If you’re unsure what is on the Dirty Dozen list, check it out below.

Dirty Dozen

  • Apples
  • Grapes
  • Peaches
  • Strawberries
  • Imported Nectarines
  • Cherry Tomatoes
  • Celery
  • Spinach
  • Hot Peppers
  • Sweet Bell Peppers
  • Potatoes
  • Cucumber

In addition to swapping out the Dirty Dozen items with the Clean 15 you can also choose organically grown foods.  There are much stricter regulations for organic foods, about what can be sprayed on organic produce and the levels of contamination allowed  in soil.

Swapping the clean 15 for the dirty dozen makes shopping on a budget for the healthiest foods at lot easier more and more affordable.

I’m so happy to find my new favorite fruit, papaya is on the clean 15 but really disappointed that our year round staple, apples were on the dirty dozen.

Were you surprised by which fruit and veg made the list?

About sunnysleevez

I'm a freckly red head, originally from London now living in LA with 2 pale children. Frankly with our coloring we have no business being such an outdoorsy family and living in southern California. I grew up in a time when factor 8 sun milk was considered the best protection available to combat the hot rays of a holiday in southern Spain, that lead to 3rd degree burns and the rest of the vacation spent in the shade of our apartment. As a family we love to be outside, going to the beach, camping, swimming & hiking. We can't completely avoid the sun (nor should we) but taking sensible measures to avoid unnecessary UV damage is a priority. How do we do that? By staying in the shade in the middle of the day, wearing sun protective clothing (that's why I created Sunny Sleevez), a broad brimmed hat, UV rated sunglasses, using chemical-free broad spectrum sun screen on exposed areas & eating a healthy diet with as few chemicals as possible & lots of antioxidants.

  1. I was surprised to see asparagus on the 15. I thought for sure it would be on the dozen list. hmmm,

You might be surprised what you find.

Such a helpful list! Thank you! Since I grew up on a California farm that raised pears for the masses, I knew all about the chemicals used to make the crops grow. Knowing this, I buy what I can afford, but it doesn’t hurt to know this information.

  4. Not surprised, but some of my very favorites are on the dirty list. One great thing: in the last couple of years the regular supermarkets have been getting more organic produce. It’s still not easy to find fresh celery though. — thanks for a good post, and thanks for the follow (I’m following back)

  5. Congratulations!!! I have nominated you for The Versatile Blogger Award. The link to your blog is tagged in my post! 🙂 Have a great day!

This is a great post. What about fruits and vegetables that are not on either list? Like, for example, bananas.

This is rather distressing news, about peppers, spinach, celery, and strawberries. Apples I knew about. Fortunately, I eat my weight in the ‘Clean 15’ list, with the exception or corn, which, of course, is the grandaddy of all GMOs. It has become the rule, that if one does not grow it, one should not eat it. Sad, since my garden is rather abysmal! Thanks!

This list is a little different from the one I used a few years ago. I am sure it has been updated.
Now we need to be fearful of GMO’s.

Thank’s we do try to eat organic but it is not always possible. I will be carrying this list when I go shopping mushroom’s was a suprise I thought un-organic were full of pestisides.

This is really good! There are times when I’m out of town and an organic supermarket may not be available. I’m bookmarking this

  12. I’m not surprised by this list, but won’t be able to resist the Dirty Dozem. Apples are my favorite fruit — peel and all.

  13. tadeina says:

Very, very useful! Thank you. Good to know I should double down on the organic apples, but not worry about finding organic sweet potatoes. :

It is so useful to find lists that tell us what we CAN eat, rather than what we shouldn’t!

  15. I copied down the lists. Thank you. (On the dirty list, I scrub everything thoroughly, but now I’ll change plans and opt for the clean list.)

  16. This is a nice list you compiled. Thanks …

I was dissappointed that apples were on the dirty list as well. : (

I think most of what I eat is on the dirty list! Grapes, tomatoes, potatoes. strawberries…..

    sigh.

A really informative site. I haven’t seen the dirty & clean 15 lists before. I’m surprised broccoli is not on the list. Thanks for following my blog. Cheers

Very useful! I already know a few of the Dirty Dozen. Now I have a more complete list of things to buy only organic.
